Everyone knows that there are huge differences among flight ticket prices. It is important where you would like to travel with which airline, but it is also relevant when you book your ticket, when you want to travel and on what site you buy your ticket. This article can be useful not only for beginner travelers, but more experienced travelers can find new solutions.

  1. Information: Gather information! If you know the destination and the date, check the offered prices. As there are many price comparison websites and flight booking websites, it is worth spending time on them. Once you have checked all of them and selected the flights, you can visit the airline’s website. It is possible that there is a sale on those flights, so you can get them cheaper.
  2. Flexibility: If you want to travel really cheap, you should be flexible. If it is not a problem for you to travel a few days earlier or later, or if you want to go to Spain, but it does not matter to visit Madrid or Barcelona, you are more likely to find a ticket at a better price. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, you can probably travel cheaper than on Fridays and Sundays.
  3. Nearby airports: It is worth looking around for the return trip. For example, if you want to travel to Milan, but you find only more expensive solutions for the return flight, you should check if you can get home cheaper from Bolzano just 200 kilometers away. Of course, extra costs are added for the transport between the two airports. Another benefit is that you can see even more from that country.
  4. Think ahead or be spontaneous: According to most statistics, flight tickets are the cheapest 5 or 8 weeks before departure. It is not true for holiday season when we expect heavy traffic or for popular resort destination in summer. But if you know two months before when you want to travel, it is worth booking your ticket. If you feel like you just need a short break somewhere for few days, you can watch the offer of cancelled tickets or last-minute deals. You may find great destinations. App called Flight Tonight can help you with this.
  5. Mistake fares: Themost common cause of airline mistake fares is human error. Based on miscalculated costs you may find tickets with wrong pricing, so you can travel much cheaper. If you buy a ticket this way, wait with the hotel reservation until the airline confirms the booking.
  6. Connecting flights: If your destination is far, check if it’s worth taking a connecting flight. It’s often cheaper than a single flight. You can find a cheaper solution for the return flight, if you book the two routes separately.
  7. Baggage: When flying with a low-cost airline, find out how many bags you can take without extra fees and how much additional fees the airlines charge for extra baggage, for reserved seating and for onboard services. The ticket can be cheap, but if you add these fees, you can still save money by choosing the flight of a traditional airline. Be sure to read the fine print to avoid surprises.

+1. Flight delay and cancellation: If you have a flight disruption for which you are entitled to compensation, do not miss the opportunity! You may get money back for your next trip. In case of flight delay, cancellation and missed connection, the airports can also offer compensations. Please do not hesitate to contact us when you can be entitled up to EUR 600 in compensation depending on your flight distance.

The number of travels has significantly decreased due to the pandemic situation, but we should not forget that a checked-in luggage can be lost, destructed or damaged. Let’s see the cases:

We can talk about destruction, loss or damage to baggage and baggage delays. The air carrier is responsible only for the checked-in baggage. Obviously, there are certain exceptions when the luggage is already damaged or overused.

The European Council mentions air carriers’ liability for passengers and their baggage in EC Regulation 2027/1997. Under the Regulation airlines must inform passengers of the provisions relating to their liability.

It is important to know that each airline has got very detailed rules and regulations regarding baggage problems. So, the rules of procedure are determined where and within what time the passenger have to report the problem and in what cases the airline is exempted from the payment and what the maximum amount is that the airline has to pay to the passengers etc. You can read it in their policy on their website. However, these rules must meet EC Regulation.

Under EC Regulation the air carrier’s liability for delayed or destroyed baggage is up to 1000 SDR. It’s about 1200 EUR.

It is important that the airlines can make a payment over that amount limit but they are not allowed to set a smaller amount limit.

You can make a claim not only against the air carrier but you can request a payment from your insurance company. Travel insurance policies always contain insurance events concerning lost and damaged luggage. It is essential that the insurers reimburse only under the terms and conditions in the contract. If there are certain exclusions in the contract, the insurer will not pay for them. It is also important that the insurers reimburse only those damages that have not been paid by the airlines. That’s why the insurers require all documents used during the procedure with the airline.

It is not a travel season now, however in the future, it is worth checking not only the terms and conditions of the airlines but buying a travel insurance in order to get a full reimbursement for our lost or damaged baggage.

Airlines got into difficult financial situation last year. Not only low-cost airlines have become insolvent but major airlines also suffer due to Covid lockdown restrictions. What can a passenger do who could not travel and did not receive a ticket refund?

Obviously, certain airlines were supported by government bailouts to survive. It can be a short-term solution, but it is important that these state aids should not be banned.

Passengers who could not travel last year due to the restrictions, they had troubles getting a ticket refund from almost each airline. Therefore, the European Commission made a recommendation in May 2020.

Under the Recommendation passengers have the choice to accept reimbursement of the full cost of the ticket either in cash or in the form of a voucher. In order to make vouchers more attractive, air carriers should issue vouchers with a higher value than the amount of any payment made for the ticket. It is also essential that the vouchers must have a longer validity period. This is very important 9 months after the Recommendation, as there are still travel restrictions due to the pandemic.

What can we do if the carrier become insolvent? This is a difficult question. First of all, we have to check if the Member State has a Fund to provide support to air carriers. If so, it is possible to file a claim against it. If not, the creditors should have the possibility to lodge their claims in insolvency proceedings. If it is a larger airline, it can be a member of any association providing a fund for these cases.

As most airlines are headquartered abroad, so the above procedures are not only complicated for an average passenger but they are more expensive than a claim for the refund. Therefore, it is always necessary to examine case by case if it is worth taking further legal action.
